Donald Trump is one of the most talked about people in the world right now. The US war with Iran, rising fuel prices and the coming midterm elections have kept him in the headlines every day. This post explains who he is, step by step, in simple words.

The short version

  • Name: Donald John Trump
  • Born: June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York
  • Age: 80 years
  • Job: 47th President of the United States (second term)
  • Net worth: about $6.1 to $6.5 billion, according to Forbes estimates
  • Big news now: the US-Iran war and the midterm elections on November 3

Birth and early life

Trump was born in New York City. His father, Fred Trump, was a real estate developer, and Trump joined the family business after studying at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He later became famous for building towers, hotels and golf courses, and for his TV show The Apprentice. He has been married three times and has five children: Donald Jr., Ivanka, Eric, Tiffany and Barron. His current wife is Melania Trump.

How he became president

He won the 2016 election and served his first term from 2017 to 2021. After losing in 2020, he came back and won again in 2024, defeating Kamala Harris. He is the 45th and the 47th president, because his two terms are not back to back. He was also convicted in a New York case in 2024 over falsified business records, which he strongly denies and is fighting.

Property and money

Forbes estimated his wealth at around $6.5 billion in early 2026, with about $8.4 billion in assets and $1.1 billion in debts. A June 2026 report put it near $6.1 billion. His best-known properties include Trump Tower in New York, the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and Trump National Doral in Miami. He also owns golf courses and resorts, and has a large stake in Trump Media, the company behind Truth Social. In January 2026 his company announced a $7 billion real estate project in Saudi Arabia.

Forbes reported that much of his recent jump in wealth came from crypto, including a memecoin that earned him roughly $710 million. Critics say a presidnet should not earn money like this while in office. Trump and his team reject this view. Please note that nobody knows his exact net worth, becuase these are only estimates.

The Iran war

This is the biggest story today. The war began in February 2026, when the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran. It is now six months old, and the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route, has been disrupted. This has pushed fuel prices up around the world, including in Pakistan.

Here is where things stand:

  • Trump said on October 8 that the US will not attack Iran before the November midterms, and that “productive” talks are going on.
  • He has also said the war will end “immediately” after the election.
  • At the same time, he has threatened to hit Iran very hard, and on October 1 he said Iran must either make a deal or be “blown up”.
  • US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth says American forces have destroyed Iran’s navy and air force. Iran denies that it is beaten and says its nuclear work is peaceful.

Reuters says the war and higher fuel prices have pushed Trump’s popularity to record lows.

Criticism against him

These are the main claims made by his critics. The White House and Trump reject many of them.

  • Media lawsuits: He sued the BBC for up to $10 billion over an edited clip, and sued Rupert Murdoch and the Wall Street Journal for at least $10 billion over an article about his past friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. Critics say this is pressure on the press.
  • Military strikes: US forces have killed people in strikes on alleged drug boats, and critics question whether this is legal.
  • Travel bans: His government added seven more countries to the full travel ban list.
  • Conflict of interest: Critics point to his family business deals and crypto earnings.

What Trump says about Imran Khan

Many Pakistanis ask this, so here are the facts.

During his first term, Trump often spoke warmly about Imran Khan. Fact checkers found that he called him a “great leader”, “my friend” and “a good man”. In 2019, he also said he trusted Imran Khan.

But there is a lot of fake news on this topic. A viral video from the 2024 election day showed Trump promising to free Imran Khan from jail. That video was fake. A fact-check also found that Trump never said that he had “learnt a lot” from Imran Khan or called him “my leader”.

Imran Khan is still in jail. According to a report by Zeteo, supporters who hoped Trump would help him have not seen any real support from the Trump administration. We did not find any new public statement by Trump about Imran Khan this month.

What happens next?

The next big date is November 3, the midterm elections. Trump’s party, the Republicans, wants to keep its narrow majority in Congress. How the Iran war goes will probably decide a lot.

This is a developing story, and details may change. We will keep you updated.
